Desire2Learn Community Showcase Course, Redux

For those of you who are Desire2Learn users, you may remember that I created a Desire2Learn Showcase course last year, featuring some of the widgets that I use in my own courses. I cannot believe a whole year has gone by! Now that the Community has been upgraded to the latest version of Desire2Learn, I decided to go in and revamp the Showcase course, profiling some of the wonderful new sources for widgets that are available these days, especially the fantastic materials at SpringWidgets.com.

So, if you are at a school using Desire2Learn, you can visit the Showcase course at the Desire2Learn Community website. Unfortunately there is no guest access to the course for non-Desire2Learn users - I wish that they would add that! As soon as I get my courses set up in August for the coming Fall semester, I'll be sure to enable guest access to those courses at least, so that you'll be able to see how the widgets look in action! Meanwhile, here is a screenshot of the Showcase course homepage (click on the image for a larger view):

Andrew Lang Fairy Tale of the Day

This is a collection of 365 Fairy Tales by Andrew Lang, selected from his series of twelve "colored" Fairy Tale books. The script displays the opening paragraph of a fairy tale, with a link where you can read more online. You can choose to view a Fairy Tale of the Day, with a different fairy tale displayed for each day of the year, or you can choose to view a Random Fairy Tale (random display every time the page refreshes).

You can get the javascript to add this widget to any website (blog template, course management system), or you can add the widget with just one click to your Blogger.com blog.

Here's the link for the script and more information:

Combined Widgets

One of the fascinating things about the javascript widgets created by RotateContent.com is that a widget can have another widget for content. So, you can create random widgets which select other widgets to display at random. Using this technique, I've created some combined widgets using the pre-existing materials at SchoolhouseWidgets.com. If you are interested in several widgets, but only have space to display one widget on your webpage, this may be a good solution for you!

Here are the combined widgets I have created for my own use in teaching, which I hope might be useful to others as well:

Random Gods and Goddesses: Combines Hindu Gods and Goddesses, Greek Gods and Goddesses, and Greek Mythological Creatures

Random Greco-Roman Image: Combines Greek Gods and Goddesses, Greek Mythical Creatures, and Roman Emperors

Random Aesop: Combines Aesop's Fables and Barlow's Aesop

Random Myth and Story: Combines Bible Stories, Women of the Bible, Greek Gods and Goddess, Greek Mythical Beasts, Aesop's Fables, Barlow's Aesop, World Tales, and Hindu Gods and Goddesses

Random Bible Image: Combines Bible Stories, Women of the Bible, Joseph and his Brothers, Annunciation Scenes, and Crucifixion Scenes

Random Religion: Combines Bible Stories, Women of the Bible, Joseph and his Brothers, Annunciation Scenes, Crucifixion Scenes, Hindu Gods and Goddesses, and Greek Gods and Goddesses

Random Image: Combines Aesop's Fables, Barlow's Aesop, World Tales, Hindu Gods and Goddesses, Greek Gods and Goddesses, Greek Mythological Creatures, Roman Emperors, Bible Stories, Women of the Bible, Joseph and his Brothers, Annunciation Scenes, and Crucifixion Scenes

Random On This Day: Combines This Day in South Asia, Author Calendar, This Day in Technology, and Holidays

Here's an example of the Random Image Widget script in action (if you are reading this via RSS or email, please visit the blog to see the script in action).

Tip: Adding a Javascript Widget to PBWiki

In response to a question from a teacher who is creating a wiki for her class, I've posted these notes about how to add a javascript to a PBWiki (a great free hosted wiki service, with ad-free wikis available for educators!).
